Here's what is going on in Room 253 this week:
- Math- We will wrap up Unit 10 and assess this week. We will focus on calculator skills (10-8), frequency distributions (10-9), and coordinate grids (10-10). We will also have a review day to help review our unit before we assess on Friday. The students will be given a study guide on Monday.
- Reading – To finish off the year we will be revisiting our character studies. I want the students to finish the year off with a strong understanding of internal and external character traits. We will work on improving our deep thinking skills and deepen our understanding of good book conversations. We will work as a class to read How To Eat Fried Worms
- Writing- This week we will draft and publish our finished persuasive pieces. We will work hard to edit with our partners, have great partner talk and work hard to finish off this work! I am so amazed at how far all their writing has come.
- Social Studies- We will send home a study guide for the economics test on Monday. We will spend two days reviewing economics and then assess on Thursday.
- Word Study- The students are now moving onto multi-syllabic words. The students are looking at various spelling patterns, noticing when they syllable junctures are. The students will also look at open and closed syllables. This is really hard work!

We are definitely into the final countdown for the year! This is one of many busy weeks! Here we go!!!
Here's what is going on in Room 253 this week:
- Math- This week we will wrap up Unit 9: Multiplication & Division. Because this unit had 13 lessons we will take 2 or 3 days to review for our test that will be in the middle of next week. We will continue to reinforce and practice various multiplication algorithms. We will also continue to test the students on their addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts.
- Reading – This week we will work on note-taking skills for our Living Museum. The students will study their biographies and focus on pulling out what makes this person “note-worthy”. The students will write their speeches so that they have all next week to practice. Please e-mail myself or Mrs. Tucker if you have any questions about the Living Museum.
- Writing- The students have worked hard on their thesis statements. Now we will continue to construct our writing pieces and begin our drafting this week.
- Social Studies- We had our first of many POP quizzes in economics last week. I think the students are now taking the material more seriously. This week we will be launching our own classroom economy. The students will receive “Lion Bucks” every week and learn how to pay rent (desk and chair), get paid for jobs, and pay fines. This should be fun! :)
- Word Study- The students are now moving onto multi-syllabic words. The students are looking at various spelling patterns, noticing when they syllable junctures are. The students will also look at open and closed syllables. This is really hard work!
- Grammar- We are going to finish subject and predicate and move onto subject/verb agreement.

- Next week, Third Grade will be hosting Lower School Chapel, on April 15. The third graders will need to head over around 7:50am to get ready. Please be on time! Parents and families, you are welcome to attend. The chapel service will begin at 8:15. Please sit on the right side facing the front on the first 12 pews. If those spaces are full, please go to one of the back pews. We hope to see you there!
Here's what is going on in Room 253 this week:
- Math- We are still on Unit 9 in math. The students are working hard to learn various ways to multiply! This week we will be continuing that great work. We will do a whole class exploration that will be looking at arrays, equal triangles, and the strength of paper (9-10). The kids always love explorations!! We will also be looking at products of two digit numbers- trying out new (and old) algorithms to solve. *** For those of you having a hard time wrapping your head around the Lattice Method (I've been there!), try clicking this link and watching the short video! Lattice Multiplication Video
- Reading – This week we are really diving into our biography unit. You may be hearing things of the “Living Museum” already, but don’t worry! We will send home a letter in a week or so with all of those details! For now, we really want the students to focus on the biography genre as a whole. This week we will be looking at making predictions as well as reflecting on WHY these people are important. Not everybody gets a book written about them- these people are world changers.
- Writing- The students this week are learning that opinions only matter if they have evidence to back up their thesis. Yes, thesis. The students this week are going to look around the world we live in and find things that could be changed—for the better. The students will pick one idea and write a brave, bold thesis about their thinking. I can’t wait to see what the students do! Once they have written their thesis they will look to see how much more information they will need to cover and how to research these specific areas. We will continue to focus on paragraphing.
- Social Studies- we are on to our Economics unit. We will begin by learning about supply & demand and the basics of an economy. We are looking into the important of money, global money, and why our economy is so important.
- Word Study- The students are now moving onto multi-syllabic words. The students are looking at various spelling patterns, noticing when they syllable junctures are. The students will also look at open and closed syllables. This is really hard work!
- Grammar- We are going to talk about subject and predicate and how sentences are made.

- Math- We are still on Unit 9 in math. The students are working hard to learn various ways to multiply! This week we will be continuing that great work. We will look at factors for numbers, learning that our factors help us with our multiplying (9-6). We will also work again with money in the unit and how to share money among an even or odd group of people and what to do with the leftover money (9-7). The students will also try dividing larger numbers by thinking of what factors they know. This will be done without a calculator (9-8). And at the end of the week the students will be learning the much anticipated lattice multiplication method (9-9).
- Reading – This week we are really diving into our biography unit. You may be hearing things of the “Living Museum” already, but don’t worry! We will send home a letter in a week or so with all of those details! For now, we really want the students to focus on the biography genre as a whole. This week we are still looking into making connections between fiction books and biographies. We are learning about the characters, their thoughts, motives, and actions. We are seeing how characters develop relationships as well.

Here's what is going on in Room 253 this week:
- Math- Last week we started Unit 9. The kids were so excited to use their multiplication skills to practice multiplying by 10s, 100s, and 1000s. We will still reiterate that division is the opposite of multiplication. This week we will be encouraging the students to work on their mental math skills to help them multiply (9-2). We will also have an Explorations day where the students can use manipulatives to discover and study arrays, areas, and fractions (9-3). The students will start to understand the multiplication algorithms this week as well (9-4). We will be looking at “buying in bulk” to help use our multiplication skills in the real world (9-5). By the end of the week we will be learning bout factors and starting to look at factor trees (9-6). It will be a busy week!
- Reading - This week we are moving into our Biography reading unit. The students will be given the chance to look and flip through several biographies to see what they notice about this genre. The students will get to familiarize themselves and look to compare and contrast how biographies and fiction books are similar. Both biographies and realistic fiction books tell a story, have characters that go through some type of problem and overcome it, and there is almost always a lesson to be learned.
- Writing- This week we will have a quick writing celebration for our opinion writing. The students will all be given a class booklet of opinion pieces to admire and use! The students really did a great job with this unit! They are ready to move into persuasive writing towards the end of the week!
- Social Studies- We will have a quick review of our government unit on Monday. A study guide will be sent hoem Monday for our test on Wednesday. Some of our main themes for this unit: Declaration of Independence, Constitution, 3 Branches of Government, How a bill becomes a law.
- Word Study- This week the students will looking at compound words. The students are noticing that compound words in these sorts are made up of one syllable words, joined together to make a two syllable word. The students will be looking at common nouns and pronouns to help learn about compound words.
- Grammar- We are learning all about pronouns this week. What they are, why we use them, how often to use them, and their purpose.

Here's what is going on in Room 253 this week:
- Math- This week we are going to be reviewing what we have already learned about fractions. We will finish this unit by looking back at all that we have learned and use number stories with fractions to assess our progress. We will also have a review day before our Unit 8 test which will be on Wednesday and Thursday. We will dive right into unit 9 and will start adding onto what we learned about multiplication and division in unit 7 and kick it up a notch.
- Reading- This week we will be wrapping up our mystery book clubs. The kids have really enjoyed being in book clubs and trying to solve the case before their group members or the book’s detectives. We will have a great ending to the unit by looking at how much we have grown as readers this year. We will work hard to make strong reading goals for the rest of the year. Our next unit of study will be biographies.
- Writing- This week we will be finishing up our opinion writing unit. We will choose from our many reviews and pick one to edit and publish. This week we will continue to look at the writing process and look through the grammar and spelling as well as making our writing strong. Our next unit of study is writing to make a real world difference: persuasive essays.
- Social Studies- We have learned about the Revolutionary War, the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution. Many of you have maybe even heard your child singing the Preamble! :) This week will will focus on the three branches of government and their importance to our government. We will learn their duties and understand how the three branches work together to make our government.
- Word Study- This week the students will be looking into plural endings. The students will explore irregular plural endings, specifically how- f changes to -ves (example: wolf- wolves)
- Grammar- This week we will review nouns, adjectives, and verbs! I am looking at our 3rd grade learning continuum and making sure to revisit these topics so that the students have a strong understanding of our basic sentence structure! The students are working hard to make posters to teach their classmates all that they know about nouns, verbs, and adjectives! There may be a quiz at the end of the week!

Friday 2/27 – No School, LS Conferences
Happy Monday,
As I sit typing this on Sunday morning, I can’t help but feel like it has been FOREVER since I have seen my 20 third graders! Last week in New York City it was so cold! I can’t even describe the weather up there. Being a southern girl, I panicked at the first sight of snow… who knew that the world doesn’t stop when snow hit the ground? I learned so much at Teachers College and I cannot wait to share all of the wonderful resources and strategies I learned with my colleagues! Upon arriving back in Atlanta on Thursday night I began to feel a little funny. I want hoping that it was just fatigue. I woke up Friday with what I would later find out (after a 5 hour trip to the ER) with the stomach flu! I’ve spent the weekend resting and hydrating. Nothing is going to stop me from being back in Room 253 tomorrow!!
Here's what is going on in Room 253 this week:

Here's what is going on in Room 253 this week:
- Math- This week we are going to be reviewing what we have already learned about fractions. What do we know about them? When do we use them? Once we finish reviewing we will move on to equivalent fractions (8-5). The students will first start looking at equivalent fractions with pictures and quickly learn that their multiplication skills will help them identify equivalent fractions. We will also begin to compare fractions (8-6). The students will understand that the bigger number doesn’t always mean a bigger fraction. The students will use their fraction cards as well as other visuals to help them compare fractions
- Reading- This week we will only have reading twice because of the conference schedule. We are going to rewind a bit and talk about book clubs. What are book clubs? Why do we have them? I want the students to be able to articulate that reading in book clubs help them grow as readers. Having partners reading the same story helps push their thinking and ideas. Having book club conversations is also a wonderful way to check for comprehension. We will also work on mini-mysteries this week. I want students to start seeing that mysteries have common themes- specific crimes, suspects, story lines, etc. The students will be allowed to bring their books home over the long weekend.
- Writing- This week we will work on elaborating our reasons for our opinion reviews. Last week we looked at how reviews are set up and this week we will work hard to write our own! The students will also get the chance to study other students’ book reviews form across the country. I believe that when the students see the work they are expected, and understand the final product, they will be able to write amazing reviews!
- Social Studies- We are still going to be learning about the 4th of July this week. We will have a discussion about the 4th of July as well as talk about how the U.S. first was part of the 13 colonies. This work will tie in nicely with not only our most recent Native American unit, but with the work the students did last year in 2nd grade to learn about Georgia and the settlements. We will then look over parts of the Declaration of Independence together and piece together our understandings of this important document.

It is 6 degrees in NYC and I definitely look like a southern girl in the north! I am so excited to be attending Columbia University's Teacher College this week! It is such a treat!
I want to send out a few reminders--
- Please send your child to school with a jacket, scarf, hat, gloves, etc. If it is above 32 we will be going outside for recess!
- If your child doesn't feel well, please keep them home for the day to monitor them. I would hate for your child to be at school sick or accidentally get another student sick as well! I want us all healthy and happy in 2015!
Here's what is going on in Room 253 this week:
- Math- We just started Unit 8- Fractions. I was pleased to see how much the students remembered from the past years. I think that their work in second grade has created a strong foundation for this unit. This week we will be working on identifying and understanding fractions. The students will complete a blocks in a bag lesson that allow the students to find the fractions of different colors of blocks in the bag. (8-2). The students will also look at how fractions are found on aa number line and in measurement(8-4). We will also work in small groups to explore fractions using manipulatives. (8-3)
- Reading- The students were introduced to specialized detective vocabulary last week. The students practiced finding these terms in their stories. Some examples are:clues, mystery, sleuth, alibi, red herring, etc. This week the students will work hard to TALK and ACT like detectives, making sure to use these words when having book club conversations. The students will still keep their books at school this week so we can continue to practice the right practices of being in a book club. The students will eventually try to be in a competition with the book's detective. The students will try to use different strategies to help them try to solve the mystery before the book's detective.
- Writing- The students have now narrowed down their likes/dislikes list to only a few topics that they would like to write reviews on. The students focused on specific details and are now ready to write their clear opinion statement. The students will try this out with all of their topics and will then go onto writing the reviews. The students will use the OREO method to help them write persuasive reviews (O- Opinion R- Reasons E- Examples O-Opinion restated)
- Social Studies- W will learn about the 4th ofJuly and theDeclaration of Independence. We will start from the beginning, explaining how the colonists first rebelled to have their own government and freedom. will learn about the three branches of government and each of their importance. Most importantly, the students will learn why a government is so important and what civilians can do to get informed and understand our government.
- Word Study- This week the students will be looking into plural endings. The students will explore and notice which words have an –s or an –es ending.
- Grammar- We are working hard to understand the components of long and strong sentences.

Here's what is going on in Room 253 this week:
- Math- We have just finished up Unit 7. This week we will spend one day reviewing in small groups as well as taking a practice test. We will then have our test and then our problem solving re-engagement. This is when we go back and look at ways in which we can make our open responses stronger so that we can continue to grow to become excellent problem solvers. At the end of the week we will start Unit 8 which is all about fractions. The students have worked with fractions in years past so this unit will be taking what they already know about fractions and kicking it up a notch!
- Reading- We have just started our mystery book clubs and boy, are they a hit! The students seem so excited to work in book clubs and become detectives to help crack the case! The students will step into the sleuth’s shoes and work on envisioning, predicting, and inferring. The students will also read with cautions and stop very often to think about what the mystery is, and if there are any new clues. The students will also work hard to study the genre specific vocabulary that is used when reading mystery book clubs. Some examples are: alibi, red herring, detective, sleuth, etc. The students won’t be allowed to take home their book clubs quite yet as we want to make sure they aren’t racing through the books and are really stopping and thinking long and hard about their texts.
- Writing- Writing opinion pieces is becoming more difficult than the students thought it would be. After studying articles, the students have begun to see how a critic’s mind works. The students will work on recording specific details about their opinions as well drafting their first opinion piece by the end of the week. I have so enjoying reading their restaurant reviews and can’t wait to see what else they have to say!
- Social Studies- We will kick off our government unit this week with our trip to the capitol on Monday. The students will review what they learned on the field trip as we slowly begin to dip our toes into our government unit. We will learn about the three branches of government and each of their importance. Most importantly, the students will learn why a government is so important and what civilians can do to get informed and understand our government.

Here's what is going on in Room 253 this week:
- Math- Last week we built a wonderful foundation for truly understanding the meaning of multiplication, and this week we will continue to build on those ideas. We know that multiplication is repeated addition and will use this knowledge to apply it to real life circumstances such as basketball games (7-5). We will also work to learn and understand extended facts. Now that we know basic multiplication facts, we will be able to understand that extended facts are similar to those facts we already know! (7-6, 7-8). We will spiral back to estimating costs of items this week and work on ways that multiplication can be used to help estimate more quickly and proficiently (7-8). At the end of the week we will be participating in explorations where the students are able to use manipulatives to model and explore multiplication and division in real life circumstances.
- Reading- We are kicking off our mystery book club unit with a big surprise! The students will learn what it is like to be detectives and solve mysteries. The students will be working in partnerships or groups and will be reading to solve exciting mysteries. The students will work on envisioning, inferring, and predicting while reading in their book clubs. The students will work hard as a group to stay together and work to create quality book club conversations.
- Writing- We are hopping right into persuasive writing this week. The students will be looking at various reviews and critiquing the author’s word choice, ideas, and opinions as well as coming up with some of their own. The students will work to see both sides of an opinion piece and will compile a list of their likes and dislikes that they will hopefully write about throughout this unit.
- Social Studies- Now that we have finished filming our Native American projects the students will practice their presentations. The students have become “experts” in their region and have worked so hard to research and understand the tribes from their region. The students will be given a cumulative test on the Native Americans before moving onto government and economics.
- Word Study- This week we are looking at words that have irregular past tenses. An example: sleep (present), slept (past) not sleeped!
- Grammar- We are working hard to understand the components of long and strong sentences.

Here's what is going on in Room 253 this week:
- Math- This week will be wrapping up Unit 6 and moving into Unit 7. We will be completing our re-engagement lesson for our open response problems today. This will involve the students working in groups to improve their open response skills. They will be given manipulatives and be able to bounce ideas off of one another to become stronger problem solvers! We will also be giving the Mid-Year Assessment this week. This will show how far we have come from the beginning of third grade. Unit 7 is all about Multiplication and Division. The students have been working hard to memorize their facts, and Unit 7 will help them build multiplication and division concepts. We will work with patterns in products (7.1) to learn square facts. We will then review all of the multiplication and division concepts we have learned in our multiplication facts survey (7.2). As we continue to learn more facts, we will also stress the importance of reviewing the facts we have already learned. We will play multiple games to help us get those facts down fast (7.3). We will then move into solving number models with parenthesis (7.4).
- Reading- Now that our students are expert nonfiction readers, we will be celebrating all that they know this week by allowing them to teach their classmates about what they have read and learned about. We remind the students that there are specific ways to teach your classmates all that you know and we must act like experts. We should use key vocabulary terms, an explaining voice, gestures, and pictures. The students will work hard to wrap up this unit!
- Writing- This week the students are publishing their nonfiction writing pieces. The students have been given time to revise and edit their writing as well as work with their partners to get feedback and now it is time to write! The students will be given special paper choices that look just like pages in nonfiction books! The students will also get to create a glossary with their key vocabulary terms. The students are ready to write long and strong to finish this unit. We will have our writing celebration on Friday.
- Social Studies- Now that the students have researched their assigned region and the tribes that inhabited that area, the students can now show what they know! The students will be given the opportunity to plan, create, and present their very own projects! I am putting this in their hands! Don’t worry, there will be guidance but these kids are free to do whatever they’d like. They can make a new report, an actual tipi, dress like their tribes, etc. The sky is the limit!
- Word Study- This week we will be reviewing base words and the suffix -ed We will discuss if you double the final consonant, drop the e, or do nothing before adding on the-ing.
- Grammar- We are still working with verbs this week. We are working to remind ourselves that action verbs have a noun that they are giving action to. We are working hard to differentiate if a word is a noun or a verb.

Here's what is going on in Room 253 this week:
- Math- This week we will be wrapping Unit 6: Geometry. Last week we worked hard to understand angles, polygons, symmetry, and congruent figures. All of this will help the students get ready to wrap up this unit by studying Polyhedrons over the next two days(6-11, 6-12). We will look at 3D shapes and observe and study their lines, angels, shapes, faces, and more. We will wrap up this week by having a unit 6 review as well as our unit 6 test on Friday.
- Reading- We are still working on finding the main idea. The students are working hard to read a specific heading of a nonfiction text and try to summarize or come up with the main idea. We are now not only looking into finding out the main idea, but being able to identify the supporting details. We like to think of the main idea as a table top. The main idea cannot stand up without the supporting details, or the table legs. Supporting details are sometimes hard to point out but the students are doing a great job looking at the text several times and asking themselves "what parts of this article help me understand the main idea?" These "tricks" will help the students read with a purpose. The students are also reading about various Native American tribes in reading that will cross over to our Social Studies unit.
- Writing- Now that the students have completed all of their research for their nonfiction books we will work on creating structure. We will discuss paragraphing, topic sentences, and transitional words and phrases. The students are going to complete drafting their stories before moving on to publishing.
- Social Studies- We are currently working on a nonficition read aloud titled Native Homes. The students are learning new information about different native tribes and working hard to piece them together with which region they belong in. We are working on highlighting important facts, vocabulary development, and summarizing new information. We will be breaking the country up into regions (again) and learn about the different Native American tribes that once lived there, and which still do today. We will break into different groups and begin to research the Native Americans in these regions. This unit will be inquiry and research based.
- Word Study- This week we will be reviewing base words and the suffix -ed We will discuss if you double the final consonant, drop the e, or do nothing before adding on the-ing.
- Grammar- We will be reviewing verbs this week. We are working to identify verbs and the nouns that they go along with.

Hi Parents-
I hope all of you are having a great start to your week, I know I am. This past weekend I was in Somerset, KY where my grandparents grew up and married. I was fortunate enough to go this past weekend up there to celebrate the life of my grandfather who passed away suddenly while I was with him over the winter holiday. It was so wonderful to be surrounded my family and friends who all loved my grandfather dearly. It was a wonderful and cold weekend filled with family and love.
I want to send out a few reminders--

Hi Parents-
I hope all of you are having a great start to your week, I know I am.
I want to send out a few reminders--
- Please send your child to school with a jacket, scarf, hat, gloves, etc.
- Math- This week we will be continuing to work on Unit 6: Geometry. Last week we built a foundational understanding of lines and basic shapes. This will help us explore and understand polygons(6-6). We will work on drawing angles and understanding and naming right angles as well. (6-7). After we gain a good grasp of drawing angles we will learn about how to measure angles (6-8). Once we understand how angles work together to make polygons, the students will explore shapes and understand symmetry (6-9). We will then finish the week of by having explorations of congruence, line segments, and decimals (6-10).
- Reading- We are still working on finding the main idea. The students are working hard to read a specific heading of a nonfiction text and try to summarize or come up with the main idea. Students will still be asked to look at headings, subheadings, the first or last sentence, etc. These "tricks" will help the students read with a purpose. The students are also reading about various Native American tribes in reading that will cross over to our Social Studies unit.
- Writing- Now that the students have completed all of their research for their nonfiction books we will work on creating structure. We will discuss paragraphing, topic sentences, and transitional words and phrases. The students are starting to draft their pieces keeping an eye for structure.
- Word Study- This week we will be reviewing base words and the suffix -ing. We will discuss if you double the final consonant, drop the e, or do nothing before adding on the-ing.
- Grammar- We will be reviewing commas again this week. The students MUST be able to use commas in lists, dates, city/state, and large numbers. We will also study that commas are used in greetings/closing of letters, and with quotations.

Here's what is going on in Room 253 this week:
- Math- This week will be starting Unit 6: Geometry. This unit will allow students to explore the two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes we see everyday in our lives. We will learn about shapes and geometry from the very beginning. The students will start with understanding points on a plane. Then they will move onto line segments (6-1). After understanding the basics of lines, we will review and explore parallel lines and intersecting line segments (6-2). We will then see that when two line segments connect, angles are made. The students to look into angle and turns (6-3), and then study triangles (6-4). After looking at, exploring, and studying three-sided triangles, the students will finish the week learning, measuring, and studying quadrilaterals (6-5)
- Reading- This week we will dive right back into our non fiction reading. The students have been exploring various non fiction topics and reading about them. This week we will use mentor texts and articles to determine the main idea. Students will be asked to look at headings, subheadings, the first or last sentence, etc. These "tricks" will help the students read with a purpose. The students are also reading about various Native American tribes in reading that will cross over to our Social Studies unit.
- Writing- Now that the students have completed all of their research for their non fiction books we will work on creating structure. We will discuss paragraphing, topic sentences, and transitional words and phrases. The students will hopefully start drafting by the end of the week with great graphic organizers to help them write their books.
- Social Studies- We are currently working on a nonficition read aloud titled Native Homes. The students are learning new information about different native tribes and working hard to piece them together with which region they belong in. Happy Monday Parents,
I hope all of had a wonderful warm weekend! I enjoyed the beautiful weather and spent as much time as I could outside. I love this time of year. This past week when we went on our shopping trip to Target I was in tears the whole time. This was such a special trip for our class. The students not only had fun, but really were able to put their heart into this trip and worked hard to find gifts that they thought these other children would like. It was sweet and heartfelt and those kids are lucky to have had our 20 pick out their gifts! Thanks to all the parents who went shopping, helped us wrap, and will be helping us deliver- I can’t thank all of you enough! These next two weeks will fly by but we will be working hard, and having fun!

Here's what's going on in room 253 this week:
- Math- We are still in Unit 5 (Place Value in Whole Numbers and Decimals). This week we will be working on wrapping up this unit and our last math unit until 2015. We will work on measuring and understanding decimals through looking at rainfall data (5-10). We will also be working on looking at place value in decimals so that the students are able to better understand tenths, hundredth thousandths, etc. (5-11). This unit has been tough, but don’t worry- this is the first time they are learning this, but it won’t be the last! We will be reviewing for the test on Wednesday and Thursday and hopefully will be ready to assess on Friday.
- Reading- We are starting to get back into the swing of reading nonfiction texts. The students are doing an excellent job recalling the important text features of nonfiction texts as well as how to read them. This unit is about finding the main idea, thinking deeply about the content, and looking into the author’s purpose. The students will be able to work with their reading partners a lot during this unit, re-visiting how partners work together to bounce ideas off of one another. We will be doing a lot of great thinking work during this non-fiction unit. I am still looking for more non-fiction reading in their homework logs and will continue to remind the students of this.
- Writing- the students completed their nonfiction on-demand piece last week and I was impressed at all of hard work they put into producing their informational texts. This week we will work on exploring various topics that we feel like we are “experts” on. We will compile lists of topics and work to see how many supporting details or facts we know about these topics. We will be doing a lot of pre-writing planning to help the students zoom in to their topics and take specific perspectives.
- Social Studies- We are currently working on a nonficition read aloud titled Native Homes. The students are learning new information about different native tribes and working hard to piece them together with which region they belong in. We are working on highlighting important facts, vocabulary development, and summarizing new information. We will break into different groups and begin to research the Native Americans in these regions. This unit will be inquiry and research based.
- Word Study- We are working on one syllable words that have different spelling patterns. Most of these words are familiar words that students have learned. We are also continuing to not only focus on how to spell the words, but how to use them correctly in their writing. We have also introduced (or re-introduced) digraphs and blends to the students. I believe that with more practice, the students will continue to grow to be stronger spellers.
- Grammar-Plurals- when to add –s, -es, and –ies.

Here's what's going on in room 253 this week:
- Math- We are still in Unit 5 (Place Value in Whole Numbers and Decimals). We will be completing small group explorations to explore estimates and polygons (5.6). We will be moving into the decimal portion of this unit this week. We will discover decimals and use base ten blocks to understand tenths and hundredths (5.7 & 5.8). We will also go back into looking more closely into the metric system. We will be completing measurement conversions, now with a more solid understanding for tenths and hundredths of a meter (5.9). Our main focus will be to learn about decimal notation and continue to work on place value for whole numbers and decimals.
- Reading- We are finally moving into Non-Fiction reading. We will continue to build off of our informational reading skills we practiced last year. The students will work on noticing text features, and understanding the basic themes and main ideas of the books we read. The students will be able to work with their reading partners a lot during this unit, re-visiting how partners work together to bounce ideas off of one another. We will be doing a lot of great thinking work during this non-fiction unit. I will now start looking for more non-fiction reading in their homework logs and will continue to remind the students of this.
- Writing- We are also beginning our sister study in information writing. This week the students will produce an on-demand piece, showing me what they remember about non fiction writing from the past years. Although the students love animals during their non-fiction units, we will be looking into history articles, science articles, and reading about weather as other non fiction topics. We will continue to review and begin to plan what we want to write for our next piece.
- Social Studies- We have left our geography unit, but taking what we have learned about our nation to travel back in time. We will be breaking the country up into regions (again) and learn about the different Native American tribes that once lived there, and which still do today. We will break into different groups and begin to research the Native Americans in these regions. This unit will be inquiry and research based. I am looking forward to diving back in time with the students to learn about those who once lived on our land.
- Word Study- This week we are moving to a new word study book! Woohoo! Although we are all working on similar spelling patterns, we are continuing to work in our assigned small groups of research and explore the words. We are reviewing vowel sounds, vowel spelling patterns, and focusing on one syllable words.
- Grammar- Apostrophes. Apostrophes have TWO homes- in contractions and possessives.

Parents,
We were so happy to see all 20 smiling faces back into the classroom today, we missed having our whole class present many days last week! This week the students will be tested on x0,1,&2. I wanted to give you a heads up that next week we will be moving on to x5. This may sound strange, but studies have shown that teaching the students the multiplication facts that they are most familiar with from repeated addition (count by two, fives, etc.) is a more successful way for them to retain their facts. We will return to x3 and continue on in the next few weeks.
I look forward to seeing all of you Thursday and Friday at conferences.

- Reading- We are still in our book clubs. We are working on making our thoughts stronger about our characters. This week we will focus on the lessons characters learn, as well as stepping into our characters' shoes. We are working hard to notice that all of our book club books have problems and solutions.
- Writing- We are drafting our realistic fiction pieces. I am working hard to hold the children accountable to all of the words they have learned as well as using proper punctuation. We will still stretch out our characters' thinking by remembering to SHOW not TELL.
- Social Studies- We are wrapping up our 50 states and capitals. We will finish reviewing the regions this week as well as practice and review for our quiz on Friday. Next week we will do a mini unit on Thanksgiving.
- Word Study- We are still working on homophones. Last week we worked on the magic e and "ai" as a vowel team to make the long a sound. Now we are moving onto -ay, -ea, and -eigh. It is just as important that the students know what these homophones mean and what their differences are
- Grammar- Punctuation power! We are in need of reviewing all of our punctuation marks and when we can use them!

We will be working hard up until Friday morning and have a full week of homework ahead. Here's what's happening in room 253 this week:
- Math- We are moving into multiplication and division! We are working to understand that multiplication is repeated addition and division is about having equal groups of items.
- Reading- We are still working on book clubs. By now, the students should be in their second books. Now they are able to see how their character acts throughout a series. They are starting to notice that their character acts the same way over and over again.
- Writing- We just finished up planning our realistic fiction pieces today. We have planned, discussed, and shared our ideas. Now it is time to put all of these organizational tools to use. The students have charts, graphs, pictures, and a story mountain to help them begin to write their realistic fiction pieces. I can't wait to see how they turn out.
- Social Studies- Can you believe we are almost done with all 50 states? This week we will finish up with the West Region. After that we will work on our final project. It will consist of the students choosing landmarks and writing pretend postcards from those places. We will work to research our landmarks using the iPads later this week.
- Word Study- We are still working on homophones. Last week we worked on the magic e and "ai" as a vowel team to make the long a sound. Now we are moving onto -ay, -ea, and -eigh. It is just as important that the students know what these homophones mean and what their differences are.
- Grammar- Did you know there are 23 helping verbs? Today we started to learn all of them (in a song, of course!)

Parents,
As a grade level here are a few things we are noticing that we would love your help with:
1. Please sign your child's planner on Monday Nights to indicate that you have seen the homework and know what your child is responsible for doing. (We don't want you to do too much, as we encourage independence, but we do want to know that they are showing you the page.)
2. Ask your child (once a week or so) if he or she had to fill out a homework slip. If so, ask them to explain why they had to fill one out. (We want the children to be accountable and take responsibility for what they need to do.)
3. Please don't make excuses for your little one. We know you are all busy; we all are. There are times that students may not finish or turn in homework. We don't want you, Mom and Dad, to explain why something is not done or why it doesn't come in. We will let you know if there is an ongoing problem with your little one missing assignments.
4. Please help your child add up the minutes read, pages read and minutes working on math and PLEASE REMIND THEM TO WRITE THE TOTALS on the log each week. We keep records for each child, and it will save us 30 minutes if every child adds his or her own totals. Only home reading is to be recorded on the home log.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL OF YOUR HELP!

Friday 9/5 [A Day]
Hi all-
I hope everybody had a wonderfully long weekend! I enjoyed seeing all of you at Parent Night last Thursday and getting to hear from most of you on Friday at Hopes & Dreams. I enjoyed hearing about your children and I am loving getting to know them in the classroom! Because this week is short, homework will be a little different. Although I did tell all of you our math activity logs would start this week, I am thinking we will start next week so we have a full 5 days to do our math activities.
Here are little blurbs about what we will be doing in the classroom this week:
Math: The students are still reviewing concepts from 2nd grade. We will be reviewing problems involving money and making change. We will also be focusing on patterns. Our unit 1 math test will be in the middle of next week.
Reading: We are still working on stamina! We are learning about ourselves as readers—discussing where and how we are most successful in reading. We will continue to work on our partnerships and ways in which partners work together.
Writing: We are writing small, quick stories about ideas we have gathered from our “hearts”. We will discuss personal narratives and make a chart listing elements of personal narratives while reviewing past narratives and various mentor texts.
Social Studies: We will begin working on our state book. We will be learning more about geography and the states.
Word Study: We are reviewing vowel sounds. We are also exploring adjectives and how adjectives add color to our writing.
Homework
(Get Planner Signed!)
Math: H.L. 1.10, 1.11, 1.12
Writing: Students must think of a special person. They must generate a list of ideas and topics to write long and strong about on that particular person. Once you have created your list, choose one story idea and write at least a page long narrative. (Students will be given example in class)
Reading: Students should be reading at least 4 times for at least 30 minutes each time (stamina and volume)
Again, please let me know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.

Tuesday [G Day] - All School Opening Chapel- Chapel Uniforms
- Happy Birthday Dory!
Wednesday [B Day]
Thursday [C Day] - Blue & White Spirit NUD, Parent Night
Friday - No School, Hopes & Dreams
Parents,
We had a great first full week back! We are getting into the swing of third grade! Our first week was stuffed with learning and fun! As we are getting used to third grade expectations we are still having a few hiccups regarding homework. Don’t worry, we will be covering homework expectations in depth on Thursday at Parent Night. We look forward to seeing all of you there. The times for our Parent Night Presentations are listed below:
7:05- 7:45 Ms. Jordan and Mrs. Tucker Room 253
7:50- 8:30 Ms. Jordan and Mrs. Tucker Room 253
Here are little blurbs about what we will be doing in the classroom this week.
Math- We are still reviewing main concepts from second grade. We are working on equivalent names, chance events, and finding differences. Please make sure your child knows all of their math facts as we have been timing them regularly. Knowing their math facts will help then when solving larger problems.
Reading- We are working on our reading stamina. Our goal is that the students can get settled in and read for up to 40 minutes (during workshop) by the end of August! We are also working on knowing when to “Stop and Jot”. I am encouraging the students to make a movie in their mind about what they are reading and to jot their thinking and draw a quick sketch to match.
Writing- This week in writing we are working on getting our pencils moving! We are giving them various prompts and times for free write so that they can express themselves as writers. We are focusing on specific craft moves as well as what to do when we get writer’s block. We have been working on nouns and are now moving into studying adjectives and how they add color to our writing.
Social Studies- We are still continuing to work on classroom routines and creating a classroom community. The students are really working together to make a wonderful learning environment in room 253. We are beginning to work on group work and what it means to be a “team player”.
Word Study- We are working on reviewing the basic consonant and vowel sounds before breaking up the students into groups next week.

Parents,
We had a great first full week back!

Parents,
I want to begin by saying that we had a great first week back at school. Although we were dealing with a tragedy, our students were eager and anxious to begin back on Wednesday. We worked hard to setting goals for the year, working on creating classroom community and getting to know one another. I know this year is going to be a great one!
This week is when we will start sending home their homework. Look for their homework in their planner as well as on the weebly (class website) under Monday Mail. The students will be responsible for writing homework in their planner, but I will always have the assignments posted in our Monday Mail as well. To learn more about 3rd grade homework expectations you can look under “Homework Expectations” on our weebly as well as a sheet explaining your child’s homework in their purple take home folders.
This week is a week of new beginnings. Each of our students is ready to rock and roll in third grade! We are ready to get a move on and jump right in to our new curriculum.
This week we will begin by reviewing what Reading Workshop and Writing Workshop look like in the classroom. We will discuss what workshop teaching looks like, sounds like, and feels like. Third grade is a little different! Students are going to be held accountable to making their workshop time worthwhile. It is important to establish this routine at the beginning of the school year to help build stamina. I will also be reading with each of your children so that I can begin putting them in their “just right” books. The students will work on building a reading and writing life in our first units of study and will be given plenty of opportunity to get back into the swing of things throughout the next few weeks.
We will also start our first unit of math on Monday. The first few units are a review from second grade. We will start with numbers, sequences, and understanding specific tools that can be used in mathematics. The students will enjoy this refresher course and will still be practicing these “life long” skills.
In Social Studies we are working on building our classroom community. We have discusses what it means to be a great classmate and what qualities we are looking for in friends. We will continue to work on building our classroom community
We will begin our word study and grammar this week by reviewing basic phonics sounds. We will work with consonants, and vowels—both long and short. We will also review punctuation, and parts of speech.
Homework is as follows:
· Math: HomeLinks 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 (These are to be returned the day after the lesson is taught)
· Reading- Be sure to log your reading- Students are expected to read “just right” books for at least 30 minutes 4 times a week. Logs are due the following Monday- the students are to log their pages read, as well as their minutes read not only nightly but weekly as well.
· Writing- To ease into the idea of having writing homework I am asking that the students take home their writer’s notebooks and decorate them. They will bring them back each day but can decorate them however they see fit. Students have made collages, mod podge, or drawn pictures on both the front and back covers. I want them to feel a sense of ownership over their writer’s notebooks.
*** You will see in your child’s agenda this week’s homework. Please sign the bottom of their agenda on Monday nights showing that you have seen their homework for the week. This is a great way to keep communication between home and school work.
Have a great week and feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
